Every now and then you see them running on the tracks: long freight trains full of containers or bulk cargo traveling from the port of Rotterdam or Amsterdam to the European hinterland. There's a good chance these are DB Cargo trains: one of the largest European rail carriers. It's no surprise, then, that they deal with enormous amounts of data. E-mergo helped them implement Qlik Sense to make insight into that data visual and accessible.
Thanks to Qlik Sense, DB Cargo now has a single version of the truth
DB Cargo has a huge amount of train data: where is the train running, to which destination, how fast and with how many wagons? "That train data is in turn linked to our systems for staff planning and goods administration. On top of that, logistics always involves a lot of rules when it comes to reporting," says Margje Derriks, Head of Controlling at DB Cargo. "So our request to E-mergo 2.5 years ago was to make all that information from large databases clear, visual and understandable, and to get standardized output."
The Result
A single version of the truth
DB Cargo employees now have a single version of the truth because they all look at the same dashboard with the same information, instead of their own Excel lists.
More insights
It saves DB Cargo an enormous amount of time that everything is now in one source. In Qlik Sense, various filters can also be applied. For example, they can see what the impact of this summer's floods in Germany was on our train cancellations. And what the financial consequence of that was in turn.
Easier collaboration
Another advantage is that work can be handed over to colleagues more easily, because not everyone works with their own reports anymore. This means colleagues can more easily take leave, even when it's time for the month-end close. Tasks can be handed over faster.
